2022 Audi A3 price and features: Australian pricing of new-gen Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1 Series rival creeps up

The 2022 Audi A3 will be available in two grades and two body styles - Sportback and Sedan.

Audi Australia’s new-generation A3 will hit local showrooms early next year with the point of entry jumping in price by nearly $10,000.

Kicking off the 2022 line-up is the A3 35 TFSI Sportback priced at $46,300 before on-road costs, some $9700 more than the outgoing model’s range-opening $36,600 30 TFSI.

However, Audi Australia has trimmed its A3 range for 2022, and the new entry-level grade is more comparable to the mid-tier 35 TFSI S of last year, which was priced at $40,700 – making jump in price a more palatable $5600.

Buyers can also opt for the more potent 40 TSFI quattro S line, which is positioned at $52,900 for the five-door Sportback – priced identically to the 40 TFSI quattro S line plus it replaces.

The sedan body style of either aforementioned grade will add a $2500 price premium, making the 2022 versions of the A3 35 TFSI and 40 TFSI quattro S line $6500 and $900 more expensive respectively than their equivalent outgoing variants.

Powering the 35 TFSI is a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, resulting in a 5.0 and 4.9 litres per 100km for the Sportback and Sedan respectively.

Of note, Audi previously ruled out this 1.5-litre engine in favour of carrying over the 1.4-litre engine from last year, citing the former's priority for the European market, but the decision has seemingly changed.

The 40 TFSI quattro S line meanwhile, make use of a 140kW/320Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, matching the outgoing model’s outputs, and sends drive to all four wheels.

Fuel economy in the 40 TFSI quattro S is measured at 6.7 and 6.6L/100km for the Sportback and sedan.

Standard equipment on the 35 TFSI includes 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, leather-appointed seats, dual-zone climate control, 10.25-inch virtual cockpit instrument display, wireless smartphone charger and powered tailgate for the Sedan only.

Handling multimedia duties is 10.1-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, digital radio and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support (the former able to connect wirelessly).

For safety, Audi has fitted autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, cruise control, a reversing camera and tyre pressure loss indicator as standard.

Stepping up to the 40 TFSI quattro S line adds Audi Sport 18-inch wheels, drive-mode selector, sports front seats, luggage compartment package, interior ambient lighting and auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

All four variants can be finished in one of 12 exterior colours including Turbo Blue metallic, Python Yellow metallic and Daytona Grey pearl.
